What Hair Reveals About Inca Children Sacrificed on Mountains
What Hair Reveals About Inca Children Sacrificed on Mountains
A mummified Inca child sits wrapped in woven textiles, its long hair still intact.
🇺🇸 What the hair kept
Hair keeps recording long after the body stops. Eight mummified Inca children, a few strands each, and a lab able to read chemistry the way you read tree rings. That is the finding. The strands carried traces of cocaine and alcohol, and in several children those traces rose in the last weeks before death. Not at some festival years earlier. Right at the end. The children had been carried up peaks well above five thousand meters, where the Inca left them as offerings, and the chemistry says they were drugged or at least dulled on the way. I kept rereading that part. A few centimeters of keratin, and suddenly you know what a child drank.

🇺🇸 The ritual everyone already half knew
Nobody was shocked that the Inca sacrificed children. The ritual was called capacocha, and Spanish chroniclers described it in a tone that mixed horror and admiration. Children were chosen in the provinces, walked to Cusco, honored, and then sent back out to the mountains. Coca leaves and maize beer, called chicha, were everyday things in Andean life, so seeing them in a ceremony is not strange. What was missing was proof for each individual child. Earlier work on three children from Llullaillaco, in Argentina, showed rising coca and chicha use in the final year, especially in the oldest girl. That study opened the door. Eight children is a bigger room.
Hair works like a timeline, recording a child's final months from root to tip.
🇺🇸 How a strand becomes a diary
Hair grows about one centimeter a month. Compounds circulating in the blood seep into the follicle and get locked into the keratin as the strand pushes outward. So you cut the hair into short segments, one after another, and run each through liquid chromatography paired with mass spectrometry. The oldest chemistry sits at the tip and the newest at the root. Fingernails grow slower, around three millimeters a month, so each bit of nail covers more time. One detail I liked is cocaethylene. The liver only makes it when cocaine and alcohol are in the blood together. I am not a chemist, and turning those concentrations into an actual dose is beyond me. The authors say it is hard too.

🇺🇸 What changes for living people
The old story said the chosen children went willingly, honored and calm. The chemistry makes that harder to defend. A sedated child is not obviously a willing one, and historians reading the chronicles now have a body of data to push against. For Andean communities that still see these mountains as sacred, the findings land differently than they do in a museum in Europe. Some descendants want the mummies treated as ancestors, not specimens. The method also travels. Any museum holding mummified remains with intact hair can ask the same questions without cutting into bone or tissue. That is a real change for curators, and a fair amount of paperwork too.
The research pipeline runs from sampling mummy hair and nails to final analysis.
🇺🇸 Still unanswered
Nobody knows the dose. Hair concentrations do not convert cleanly into leaves chewed or cups of chicha per day. Nobody knows whether the final spike matches the length of the walk from Cusco, which could have taken weeks. And eight children is a thin sample. The team has not tested whether children from other mountains show the same pattern.
